Jamboree on the Air - Jamboree on the Internet

Jamboree On The Air

On the week end of October 21st and 22nd Scouts from around the world will be participating in Jamboree-on-the-Internet (JOTI) and Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA).

JOTI is an annual Scouting event (21st) sponsored by the World Organization of the Scout Movement. This event utilizes the Internet and the numerous devices that are used to get online, from your home computer to iPad tablets, to link Scouts from around the world.  Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers.  The exchanges can include such information as name, location of event, Scout rank, age, and hobbies. Scouts can participate at home (with the help of an adult, if needed) or they can participate in a Scout group.  The official hours are from Saturday at 00:00 hours local time (midnight Friday) to Sunday at 24:00 (midnight Sunday).

JOTA is an annual Scouting event (60th) that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, across the nation, and in your own community.  Scouts of any age can participate in JOTA, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically requires speaking into a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication can also take place, such as video communication, digital communication using typed words on the computer screen transmitted by radio, communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater), and many others. The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies.   There are no official hours, so you have the whole weekend to make JOTA contacts. The “JOTA Jump Start” on Friday evening is an excellent time to get started.

JOTI participation fulfills requirements for Tiger and Arrow of Light adventures, the Citizenship in the World merit badge, and the International Spirit Award.   JOTA participation also fulfills some requirements for the Radio merit badge.  E-mail questions to George Ewing at ewingg@gmail.com or MVC-BSA-International@woh.rr.com.  More information is available here.  Patches are available.
